The vast majority of people who use gambling products are recreational players - they play for entertainment, and at a level appropriate for their circumstances. However, a small number may currently or in the future have difficulty controlling their consumption of gambling products. Tabcorp believes the community, government and industry have a shared responsibility to help problem gamblers in identifying their problem, and in accessing problem gambling support services.
In Tabcorp's view, the industry's role in responsible gambling is to:
- offer products and services in a way that facilitates customers' ability to engage in responsible gambling;
- provide an environment in which customers can responsibly enjoy participation in their chosen leisure activities;
- ensure that managers and employees participate in training and awareness programs relating to responsible service;
- ensure the provision of appropriate safety nets for customers unable to control their gambling behaviour;
- ensure the provision of appropriate safety nets for customers unable to control their gambling behaviour;
- the nature of products offered, including the likelihood of winning and losing, and associated risks;
- customers' rights including avenues for complaint;
- problem gambling support services including self-exclusion programs;
- conduct business honestly, with integrity and in compliance with legislation, regulation and Industry Codes.
Tabcorp has implemented a range of initiatives to further its commitment to responsible gambling in the jurisdictions in which it operates. These initiatives include:
- Tabcorp was instrumental in the development of the Victorian Industry Codes of Practice, a first of its kind in Australia, launched in early 1997;
- In October 2001, Tabcorp initiated a Responsible Gambling Code across its gaming, casino and wagering operations, based on the framework established by the Australian Gaming Council (http://www.austgamingcouncil.org.au);
- Tabcorp supports problem gambling counselling services by displaying material about their services in its casinos, outlets and venues, and through regular liaison with representatives of the support service providers;
- Tabcorp requires its staff to undergo training in the responsible service of gambling;
- The provision and funding of self-exclusion programs throughout the company's gaming, wagering and casino operations;
- Engagement of international accounting and audit firm, KPMG, in 2003 to conduct the first independent review of compliance with the Tabcorp Responsible Gambling Code across the company's operations;
- Adoption of a responsible gambling compliance framework in accordance with Australian Standard AS3806;
